René Nyberg (b. 1946) worked from 1971 to 2004 in the Foreign Ministry of Finland. He is Finland’s former ambassador to Moscow and Berlin. 1992–1995 he worked as the head of Finland’s CSCE delegation. The story of Nyberg’sJewish family’s fates, Last Train to Moscow (2015), was published to a wide critical acclaim. His latest book Patriachs and Oligarchs (2019) tells about the recent history between Finland and Russia through the two forces behind Vladimir Putin–the Orthodox patriarchs and the moneybag oligarchs.
